Back in May, Target announced they would no longer carry the Amazon Kindle. And just last Thursday, Walmart said they would do the same – a clear indication how Amazon.com is now perceived as a major threat.

According to statements released by Walmart, one gets the idea it was price related. “Our customers trust us to provide a broad assortment of products at everyday low prices, and we approach every merchandising decision through this lens.”

Walmart said they will continue to offer customers “a broad assortment of tablets and e-readers and accessories at a variety of great price points.”

It’s hard to blame these big retailers for being so conscious of price margins, especially with the growing practice of “showrooming” (where shoppers browse products in the store, take notes and then buy them online). They must be selective on what items they carry if they are to survive (see Circuit City).

But with 22% of the tablet market, I’m sure Amazon will do just fine without them.
