One way to improve battery life is to turn on the Power Saving Mode. Go to Settings -> My Device - it's also available in the quick settings in the notification pane. Turn on CPU power saving, Screen power saving or to turn off haptic feedback. Use all three for best results.
To take a screenshot of your phone press and hold the power and select buttons at the same time until the screen flashes. The image of your screen will be saved to your phone's gallery.

Your current customizations and settings applied to basic mode will be saved and will be available when you return your device to basic mode.
